KIDS HELPING THEIR COMMUNITY

Reading may seem like a small thing, but to those living with MS around you, that little action can create a world of difference for them. See what fundraising for MS Read-a-Thon has done for the MS community

MAKING PEOPLE LIVING WITH MS FEEL LESS ALONE

The 1:1 Peer Support Program connects people affected by MS with someone who can support them through their experiences with MS and is important to making them feel less alone.

JESSIE’S STORY

I’m so thankful I found the Peer Support Program during a time when I needed support the most. I was only 20 years old when I was diagnosed with MS and it was a complete shock to me. I had no idea what MS was, and it was terrifying to have to go through this huge change in my life alone.

After exchanging a few emails back and forth with my peer, we quickly formed a strong bond. We went from talking about our MS stories to eventually, having our relationship flourish into a friendship where we can talk about our personal lives.

The Peer Support Program made me feel comfortable in my own skin again. It gave me back the confidence I lost after my diagnosis and allowed me to develop a friendship that I will cherish forever.

HELPING PEOPLE LIVING WITH MS BE SAFE IN THEIR OWN HOMES

Sometimes getting around the house is a challenge because they are not as mobile as they once were. Your fundraising can support equipment purchases, repair and/or the permanent loan of mobility equipment or safety devices in their homes. Providing people living with MS with these options helps make their homes safer so they can live in them with their families longer.

Things such as safety rails in bathrooms can cost a lot of money but are so important for those people living with MS who have balance challenges (a symptom of MS).“The equipment has greatly increased the safety factor in our bathroom, the most dangerous room in the house for me,” a funding recipient says. “I was afraid of falling, and now having the safety rails I can move with less anxiety. I feel much more supported in that environment. By being able to access this funding we were able to proceed with installation of grab bars and repair an ancient railing.
